Ensure that environmental legislation is effectively used to protect the environment and its resources from unlawful and unsustainable exploitation and negative impact.

• Biodiversity management, compliance and enforcement.
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT
Strive towards a safe and healthy environment through effective environmental impact assessment, air quality management, waste and pollution management for the people of the Eastern Cape.

• Pollution and waste management
BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT
Conserve the diversity of landscapes, ecosystems, habitats, biological communities, populations, spices & genes and promote conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the Eastern Cape.

• Biodiversity and protected area planning and management
• Conservation agencies and services
• Coastal management.
ENVIRONMENTAL EMPOWERMENT SERVICES
Empower and capacitate the external stakeholders of the Department to meaningfully participate in and contribute to effective environmental management.

• Environmental capacity development and support
• Environmental communication and awareness-raising.
