ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES


Environmental compliance & enforcement

The Compliance and Enforcement sub-programme performs a compliance monitoring function to ensure that conditions of Departmental environmental permits and authorisations are adhered to.

The unit investigates complaints and contraventions of provincial and national environmental legislation. Its special investigation unit investigates organised environmental crime and cross-border illegal activities.

Environmental impact management (EIM)

EIM offers the following services:

  • Issuance of environmental authorisations
  • Issuance of amended environmental authorisations
  • Response to queries on environmental impact assessments
  • Technical comments and inputs to the MEC on Appeals against environmental authorisations issued.

Provincial biodiversity permits

Permits are required to capture or hunt animals, fish, grow, export, or pick plants, and trade in endangered species.

Permits are issued through the Department’s six regional offices.

For example, permits for Aloe Ferox harvesting are available from DEDEAT’s regional offices.

Air quality monitoring

Air quality management ensures compliance with national air quality standards, and measures greenhouse gas emissions.

Air quality regulatory services

The province coordinates and enforces the effective management of atmospheric emission licenses and promotes alternative technologies to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions to achieve a low-carbon society.

Air quality planning & information management

The key focus is to ensure effective air quality management institutions and planning/reporting mechanisms, including cost-effective options and opportunities for decreasing air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions in the province.

Water licensing authority

The Provincial Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism is the licensing authority for general waste. The national Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental is responsible for hazardous waste applications.

These waste licenses are available from the six regional offices.

Environmental awareness & capacity building

The Department provides environmental awareness to the general public as part of its role as custodian of the natural assets of the province.

In other cases, the Department also provides capacity building to those communities where their well-being and sustainability are directly linked to the environment, and there is a national imperative.

The Department conducts these programmes with district and local municipalities. These are publicised on the Department’s social media channels.

Scientific services

Scientific Services provide research and monitoring services for the biophysical and social sciences to help ECPTA to better manage the parks and conserve the province’s biodiversity, landscapes and associated heritage assets.
